Second and Third Chances:
The New Entrepreneurship in Fashion, Beauty and Gardening

Barbara Blesi's purchase and rejuvenation of an upscale designer consignment clothing business, Second Chance, in 1998 offered her an unexpected opportunity at a new career, after surviving a cancer diagnosis. Renewed health caused her to revisit her goal of a work/life balance, and to focus on her dream of operating a clothing boutique. Blesi joins me to talk about "second chances" and helping Boomer women dress with style and grace.

Barbara Hill worked on international exchange programs for ten years, spent several years at home raising her children and was on the verge of becoming an empty nester before she considered pursuing her dream of starting her own business. Six years ago, Hill founded Bridal Artistry in 2001, a company that raises bridal and special occasion makeup to an artform. Barbara Hill joins me to talk about her third career and about the joys and challenges of entrepreneurship.

Interested in starting a vegetable or herb garden but don't know where to start? Wondering about the physical demands of gardening? Pondering the possibility of using gardening as a little bonding time with kids or grandkids? Lifelong gardener and Washington Gardener magazine publisher Kathy Jentz joins me to answer these and other gardening questions. She'll also talk about making the move from association publishing to the magazine. "Looking around," she says, "I saw that the DC region had a wonderful, rich, gardening and farming community, but they were being practically ignored by national publications." Washington Gardener Magazine was launched in 2005.
